2022 TX34 – US House Race

Summary

The 34th district stretches from McAllen and Brownsville in the Rio Grande Valley, northward along the Gulf Coast. The incumbent is Republican Mayra Flores, who was first elected with 50.9% of the vote in 2022. On March 22, 2021, former incumbent Filemon Vela announced that he would not seek reelection in 2022.

However, on October 26, 2021, Vicente Gonzalez, the current Congressman for Texas’s 15th congressional district announced that he intended to run in the new 34th district after the 15th became more Republican and his residence was put into the 34th.

Mayra Nohemi Flores (born January 1, 1986) is an American politician who represents Texas’s 34th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives. A member of the Republican Party, she is the first female Mexican-born member of the House. Before her election to Congress she was active in Hidalgo County politics.

Flores was born in Burgos, Tamaulipas, and her family moved to the United States before she gained citizenship at age 14. She graduated from San Benito High School and South Texas College. Before her congressional campaign, she worked as a respiratory therapist and as chair of Hispanic outreach for the Hidalgo County Republican Party. In June 2022, a special election in Texas’s 34th congressional district was held after Representative Filemon Vela Jr. resigned, in which Flores defeated Democrat Dan Sanchez.
